How I chose the name Trikona.

At the beginning of my photography journey I didn’t put my name on the photographs, but over a period to time I started just putting my name in the corner of the photograph with a copyright symbol. You will notice this on some of my work but its been rather inconsistent and it also didn’t feel right to me for reasons. That’s for another post I suppose!

As all along, I was not sure what I wanted to call it or even what to brand it with.

In a conversation with a person who was encouraging me to explore my creative side , it dawned on me that I wanted a name for my work. I’ve been talking to my friends about how to brand my photography and as I thought about it, it made sense to combine different influences on me and my world view and I decided on “Trikoṇa Photography”.

Trikona in Sanskrit means “Triangle” and this connects well with the exposure triangle (ISO, F Stop and Shutter Speed).

But it also speaks to my spirituality and my belief in the Deity Shiva, whom I think of as the creator of the universe. He is unfortunately often stereotyped as the destroyer, by the way, but to me he is the transformer of energy as he is energy himself.

If we take a scientific point of view, energy can neither be created nor destroyed but only transformed from one state to another.

The deity Shiva is not standalone, it is Shiva and his wife Shakti, the masculine and feminine energies together which creates all beings around us. Without Shakti there is no Shiva and vice-versa.

They are represented as two interlocking triangles and the union of both is a “6 pointed star”.

Fast forward to present day I dropped the word photography from the name and chose the name "Trikona.” To me this is a blend of the spiritual essence between my photography and my connection to the environment through my work.

Oh yes! the logo representing this connection is under development :).
